Copper tape when encountering slugs

The combination of copper and slug/snail slime creates a small electrical charge that prevents them from passing through the copper tape. Please note that it is important that the copper strip be at least 3 inches wide. Copper strips narrower than 3 inches will allow slugs/snails to pass through unimpeded.

Slugs can be prevented by using copper tape

  • In evaluating the deterrent effect of non-chemical deterrents on slugs, the copper tape was the most effective barrier and was most effective when placed on a vertical surface. A 2-inch-long copper strip was wrapped around the center portion of a hall tile block.
  • The Copper foil adhesive tape was tested in March 2019 and the copper tape was the most effective barrier, most effective when placed on a vertical surface. A 2-inch long copper strip was wrapped around the center portion of the hall tile block.
Slugs were placed on the bottom of the tiles and their movement across the tiles was observed.
  • They moved over the tiles. Ten different slugs were used for each trial. Two slugs were placed on the tile. No slugs crossed the 2-inch copper barrier. Slugs that came in contact with the copper tape would turn around, go in the direction they came from or turn horizontally.

  • Create electric shocks to prevent slugs. Two dual AA (3V) batteries, a 6-volt battery, and a 9-volt battery. Each was connected to two wires on a 4 "x 4" upright wooden block.
  • One copper wire was connected to the positive terminal. The other wire was connected to the negative terminal of the battery.
When the slugs' bodies came in contact with the two wires, they received a shock. Twenty percent of the slugs fall off the pole after receiving an electric shock. However, an electric shock of 6 to 9 volts is not strong enough to kill the slugs.
  • The copper tape was placed on a weed mat and a flat wooden surface. The copper tape was shaped into a rectangular figure and the slugs were placed inside. Fifty percent of the slugs were able to climb over the copper on the weed mat and reach the other side. When placed on a wooded surface, all slugs were able to escape from the copper box.
  • The deterrent properties of the copper tape appeared to be more effective on vertical versus horizontal surfaces, with or without food as a lure.
  • Notably, the slugs were not killed upon contact with the tape but may have experienced discomfort that caused them to turn around and retreat.
experienced discomfort that caused them to turn and retreat. This method is primarily preventative, rather than an effort at control or eradication.
In cases where the tape was placed on a horizontal surface, the slugs did not appear to be affected and they slid effortlessly across the tape.
  • This field study suggests that copper tape is an effective tool for deterring slugs.
  • Copper tape is an effective tool for deterring slugs, such as the cement blocks typically used in aquaculture and hydroponic systems.
  • It is commonly used in aquaculture and hydroponic systems instead of being placed in the ground under a riser.
