What is Copper Tape Shielding Made Of?

Backing/Liner: A protective paper or plastic release liner, removed during application.
Surface Finish: Offered in standard bare copper (develops a natural patina) or optional electroplated tin finishes (silver-white appearance) for enhanced solderability and long-term oxidation resistance.
Optional Dielectric Layer: Some specialized tapes include a thin non-conductive layer (e.g., polyester) laminated to the copper before the conductive adhesive for specific isolation needs.

Copper tape shielding Applications

It is ideal for EMI/RFI shielded cable winding and ensures electrical continuity by connecting EMI/RFI shielded chambers. Its annealed bright copper tint makes it perfect for arts and crafts projects, as it doesn't change color. Thin copper or aluminum sheets are used for foil shielding. Usually, this "foil" is attached to a polyester carrier to increase the strength of the cable. This shielded cable, also called a "band" shield, completely protects the wire it wraps around. EMI from the environment is impenetrable. However, these cables are extremely challenging to handle, especially when using connectors, because the foil inside the cable is very fragile. It is not usual to attempt to ground the cable shield completely, but instead to use a disturbance wire.
